GAME ON FOR NINTENDO AS THEIR SALES REACH 50 MILLION

mario

When it comes to the gaming world few things have the action, drama and suspense as the marketing wars between Sony Playstation, Microsoft Xbox and the Nintendo Wii. In a true David and Goliath story whilst everyone was watching the two heavyweights of Sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox. Nintendo literally wiped the floor with them by actually creating something new and exciting rather than just trying to super size what they had. The Nintendo Wii got kids, and many millions of adults, off their backsides and into a gaming zone that is the closest we have come to the promise we had of virtual reality many years ago. A system that when you swing for the fences in real life a funny looking avatar on screen mimics your action. When you throw an uppercut in the boxing ring it is the sense of achievement rather then the pain that rushes through your body. I have personally spent many hours on the Nintendo Wii with my children and every time I do I just think back to the ZX Spectrum and the Atari console that I wasted so many hours on with my friends as a child. Loving every minute and dreaming of how the game industry would evolve in the years to come.

So what did Nintendo do that made the difference in a race that until the launch of the Wii no one even considered they were in? Gaming is a combination of story, graphics and gameplay. Story, is the idea of the game, the genre (first person shooter, sports, strategy etc) and how involved the game draws you in. The graphics is all about speed, refresh rates and pixels. The bigger the box the better the resolution and experience. Then comes gameplay. Gameplay was all we had in the ZX Spectrum and Atari console. You had to have a quite an imagination to envisage yourself as a hero fighting enemies from far flung galaxies when all you were on screen was no more than a little square.

Jump forward to today and look at the three systems available, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. Nintendo is a legend in true gaming circles so it is difficult to call it an outsider but few people in the gaming world gave them much of a shout as it seemed clear that the fight would be between Playstation and Xbox. Playstation played the Blueray graphics card and came up with an amazing piece of equipment that makes games vividly realistic. Xbox with all the might of Microsoft behind it and their history puts them as a contender for the championship at some point due to it’s sheer size. But, thankfully, Nintendo created an insightful console that took gameplay to levels starry eyed games lovers could only dream of. In doing so they took the gaming industry, which is one of the fastest growing industries of our time, and upped the anti.

By reaching 50 million units sold have left the other two trailing in their wake which is great for the everyday game lover. A competition between three can only be good for everyone. The game is by no means over but having three consoles fighting over a game players attention can only be good for game players all over the world. I would love to know your opinion on the game consoles and what you would like to see. I would like to know from any fathers and mothers who spend hours like me bounding around the living room like a complete fool on the Wii with my children. Do you think the Wii will continue to be the pick of the consoles or will one of the others go one level up?
