How to Improve Your Website

Take a good look at the background of your website.  What are some of the changes you can make to enhance the look and effectiveness of your site?  Here are a few of the suggestions I have found to helpful in creating a better website.

  • Background can be extremely important!  Avoid using all black or dark backgrounds.  And do not use white or light text.  This comes across as looking down on your clientele.  Also, if the client would like to print your site for whatever reason too much ink is required to print it.  Remember that you want to keep people reading and this type of background really does not encourage them to do so.
  • The same thing goes for a dark background with dark text written on it.  It´s hard to read and can be very frustrating for your reader.
  • Don't use complicated or tiled images in your background. This may look good, however, it often takes too long to down load and people will click off your website before they even get a chance to read it.
  • Remember that the purpose of your site is to get the visitors to read the content you provide.  So make your copy attractive and easy to read.

1.  Do not use completely centered text.

2.  Use bold and italics only on the text that needs to stick out.  Overkill accomplishes the opposite.

3.  Don´t use flashing text.  It´s annoying and impossible to read.

Text and copy is there to be read.  Keep your copy interesting and informative.  You want visitors to stay on your site.  Don´t drive them away with content that bores them or insults them.

1.  Do not fill your page with zero content and only links.

2.  Be direct and serious about your content.  Some visitor may not share your sense of humor.

Multimedia concerns.  Multimedia is good so long as it is not over done.  What use is a site that has all the newest gadgets but is impossible to navigate.  The average visitor may not be computer savy.

1.  Too many images are not necessary and tend to distract your reader.  Keep the images to a max of two.

2.  Images that are too large or of high quality are not necessary.  They take too long to download or print.

3.  Audio can also be annoying.  Give your reader the option to turn it on or off.

A website is intended to be read and ultimately inform your readers.  Take the steps necessary to keep people interested in what you have to offer.
