I sat and watched this TV commercial with my daughter and son. My son is six years old and my daughter is four. How refreshing it is to hear a child’s view on anything. I have worked with creative people of all standards; those that have won the very top awards in the industry and those that have won none. Most of the time when watching commercials with agency people you have to hear the usual it looks like this or that, that doesn’t fir with the brand, why this blah blah blah. The best people in advertising just very little. Usually the person speaking the most knows the least and in advertising it is no different. Many take them selves way to serious and the others know what they are doing. Just advertising.
Sitting with my kids I hit play and got a stream of comments; Which one is your favorite color? Where are they going? Look at the frog! What’s he doing there? ooooh look a rainbow! Why are they stuck? such innocence looking a millions of colored balls bouncing down a hill to a beautiful soundtrack. Then at the end, “What beautiful color!” A six year old boy, my son, had nailed the idea which most ad people fail to. The simplicity and beauty of this commercial is usually lost on our adult minds because instead of just enjoying the show we have questions like,”Who’s going to clean all that up? What am I being sold? I don’t like Sony or whatever sometimes we should really just enjoy what is in front of us, the way we did as kids.

E-mail as much as you can. Although some things have to be sent through snail mail, most things, these days, can be e-mailed. Take advantage of this and save a good amount of trees in the meantime. Business cards are nice but have as many people as possible visit your website instead.
Invest in compact fluorescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are inefficient and use so much more power than fluorescent ones. Reduce the air conditioning usage by keeping the blinds or curtains pulled on hot days. The air conditioning may still kick on but it won’t stay on as long.
When you are not using your computer leave it in sleep mode. Only turn the computer off when you are done with it for the day. Computer use more energy to reboot than they do when they are in the hibernation mode. At the end of the day turn off the computer and unplug it to save energy.
Once you have your home based business office set up you should get an office energy audit. This will help you figure out where you are wasting energy and how you can save more. Remember the more energy you save, the more money you save.

I am a lover of books! I recently went to the recent attraction in Dubai, which seems to be at least one a week, was the largest mall in the world called The Dubai Mall. A very impressive, enormous, gigantic place that my kids had a look on their face that we were torturing them after an hour or so plodding round the endless stream of shops. A giant aquarium broke their boredom with it’s tunnel and spectacular views of the array of fish, sharks, rays etc. We continued our trek and discovered an Ice rink in the middle of the mall which had the kids in hysteria with only a promise of a visit next week quelling their demands. Then it happened we entered a glorious place called Kinokuniya. My eyes swelled and filled with joy as rows and rows of beautiful books laid in what seemed an endless variety of sections. This place was amazing. The quietest my kids have been since I can remember were lost in a fantasia of stories, pop up books and interesting things for their little hands to touch and feel. It really is a lovely place and I felt at home for the hour we were lost inside.
So why do I feel the movie of the secret is more powerful than the book. And me a book addict? Well firstly I am no speed reader and the movie gives you a concentrated hour and a half sugar rush type effect that literally picks you off the sofa, slaps you around a bit until you realize what you have been doing all your life and places you back down a renewed and rejuvenated person. When I read I can get a few chapters in if I am lucky and that break I feel softens the punch of a quite remarkable insight in to the human spirit. It shouldn’t be interrupted but if you read like me it inevitably will be. Also the movie brings out the real characters and listening to the people in their voice, their speed and passion is unmatched with your voice unravelling the words as you go. If you are looking for a life changing experience, watch the movie and enjoy the book later, I did and it changed my life! Good luck.
I remember reading a report about the making of this commercial for Honda when I was in the US for a project whilst working for Draftfcb. The story goes that the agency and the production company exchanged faxes for months each trying to outdo each other. Eventually they had a complete story and went into production. Some people believe that this was done with computer graphics which is not true. Everything you see is real and was shot live. The TV Commercial has been shown a lot around the world but I think the beauty of the production and the original idea of, “Isn’t it nice when things just work.” Is amazing. Enjoy.

When it comes to great advertising campaigns few have reached the advertising folklore dizzy heights of The Economist. In a continued campaign developed on a simple idea the brand has grown into one of the most recognized in the world. The brand has owned the solid red background and challenges the reader to understand the ad which at first looks very ordinary and plain. Creative ads are like telling a joke but you leave the punch line for the consumer to make themselves. And few campaigns have done it better than The Economist.

The best campaigns are not the single ad but the ones that are translated across all media and continue the brand idea whilst still but fresh according to the media that is being used. Check out the outdoor campaign below. The idea of a light bulb with a sensor that comes on when someone walks underneath as if an idea has just occurred is simply brilliant. I was asked recently when I judge creative work either in an agency or for award shows what is my criteria. You have the basics of art direction, copywriting, concept and brand evolution along things like is it engaging, unique to the category, relevant to the desired target audience and an acceptable promise from the brand. But mostly when the thought I wish I had thought of that comes to your mind, its pretty much a winner.
Adsoftheworld.com is a great site for people to see new, experimental or attempts at advertising. Although not all the work is world class some is and it does give an insight into new techniques, illustrative styles, conceptual thinking, how different cultures create, photographic usage, copywriting skills and art direction of varying ability. The site is a great place to view TV commercials, Print, Viral, Direct Mail and guerilla ideas. If you are in marketing this would be a great for you to truly understand the kind of questions you need to be thinking when judging your own advertising campaigns.
Anyone can comment of ads no matter what your experience
The only downside would be some of the comments on the site. Although I think the site is great at allowing people of any standard, experience or age comment sometimes it borders on the mean and immature. Now if anyone has ever worked in an agency you will know that people can be brutally honest when judging creativity. At least in an agency though the discussion is about strategy, brand and does it fit or wok within the constraints of the brief. On this site people seem to have all kinds of ways of looking at the work which can be educational when it is not personal.
One of my most favorite quotes is by Napolean Hill, Author of Think and grow rich. A The book is very inspirational and it is not about just making money. This book is about getting your mind to think about the world and your place in it. How you look at situation and can make them better for you and your family. But the quote I love is,
“What ever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
I remember the first time I heard this and it went around my head a few times each time it seemed to resonate stronger and stronger emotions within me. Then in a meeting with a few top marketers recently I discussed the quote with them and asked them what they thought of the quote. The majority spoke about how positive it made them feel and that they believe it to be true. Some even said that they visualize and believe they have something to the point they feel like they genuinely have it. One person didn’t say much until the room went quiet and all he said was this, “Everyone knows this to be true in their heart. Some people don’t believe they are worthy of having what they desire.”
It was a moment I thought about whilst on the flight back home and realized that many people are so conditioned, so brainwashed into believing that they cannot have the lifestyle they deserve that the quote also can become destructive to their lives. If you cannot see the good in your life or feel you deserve it then you obviously imagine a life of struggle and hardship. Therefore that is what you manifest. Its a frightening prospect and one that I have found many times with people I work with around the world. Can I really have my own business? Can I really make a good income by working from home or online? Can I get myself out of debt and start saving? Can I give my children the life I want for them? The answer of course is always YES!
We can do anything and I help people achieve that every day. The hardest part is not the system or things people have to learn as it is very straight forward and no previous experience is even needed. The change is in the mind set and what you believe you deserve and want from this life.
