Five years ago, our family traveled out to Modesto, CA, as our oldest son Daniel married Erin. What a joyous time! Ed, our 20 yr old son Nathan, and I had planned an extended time after the wedding to drive south and explore Joshua Tree NP, east of San Diego. We started our drive-through of the park. When we chose to, we stopped, got out of the car and climbed on the huge outcroppings near the road. It was a beautiful, sunny, warm day. I was with my family. We were healthy and able to be active. We took photos of us climbing and hiking.  We had no time constraints. We had just married off Daniel and gained a daughter.  Our family was growing!  All of a sudden it hit me. I KNEW WHY I WANTED TO BE HEALTHY AND LIVE OUTSIDE THE RESTRAINTS OF A JOB. I wanted to be able to climb on the boulders with my GRANDKIDS whom I knew were coming someday. I did not want to be stuck at the bottom taking photos because I couldn’t physically climb with them, or worse yet, be looking at photos of them climbing with someone else because I couldn’t be there because I was working. This was a defining moment for me. I had discovered a new level of motivation for success with my business and with the choices I would have to make on a daily basis.  I had to have optimal health and strong business success so that I could romp around with my grandkids the way I wanted to in the future. I found my deeper why.

What about you? Perhaps you know that you have to make a job or even a career change. Perhaps you know that you need to make some personal lifestyle changes to improve your health. Perhaps you know you need to make some difficult financial decisions that will change your lifestyle.

My defining moment 5 years ago will take on flesh and blood this July as we welcome our first grandson to the family. How exciting to have stayed the course with both business and personal choices so that we can travel out to Phoenix and enjoy this new little one who is going to add another dimension to all of our lives.

Time Management Issue To Consider With A Home Based Business

It does not matter if you are an experienced or novice business person, a small business will be a new journey. One of the major concerns is time management. Often when people start up home based businesses they underestimate the need for time management. The thought process is that you can do work whenever you want to so a schedule is not necessary. Well, while it is true that you can make your own schedule with most home based businesses, you should still have some designated work time.

Having a disciplined work schedule can be tough for some people when they are working at an employer’s office. If you have a home based business the problem could excel and become even worse. However, while at an employer’s office you may be written up for not making a deadline you will lose clients and customers if you do that with your own business.

In an attempt to steer clear of that you should set up a work schedule for yourself. It does not have to be as routine as a typical work schedule but you need some sort of guideline to go by. If you have a short attention span then you could break up the work. Work for three hours in the morning and four hours at night. Take long breaks or work long hours four days of the week for a three day weekend.

Figure out what tasks you need to get done for the week. Set up a timeline and points in the week when you want tasks completed. This will help you plan family events and still have a life while you are setting up a business of your own.

During the first year of your home based business you need to keep track of productivity and when tasks are completed. There will of course always be distractions but you must work to overcome them and continue to make progress. Sometimes you have to let the voice mail pick up calls and turn the phone off. Other times you may need to take your laptop to the local coffee shop for a few hours on Saturday morning to get some work done. Be flexible when you are working to get your home based business off the ground is important. Find out what works for you.

One thing that can greatly influence time management is the location and condition of your home based business office. If you don’t have a pleasant place to work then you will not be encouraged to go to your office and work. While you want your office to be in a part of house that does not infringe on the rest of home, you want it to be in a place that you can stand being in. The Basement is a great home office option but not if it is a drafty place that you never venture to except to do laundry. If that s the case, it is obviously not some place you want to spend a lot of time. Not to mention time working. Unless you can make it nicer then you should try out another place for your office.

Keep your office clean and professional. Don’t let the kids hang out in there and play when you aren’t using it. It helps to have a door on your home office so a spare bedroom is ideal. You need privacy for your work space even when you are not in it. You home based business office should be closed off from others.

In todays world there are many great products that have us literally salivating in and around the store. Few though have managed to capture every aspect of our imagination quite like Apple. It’s not only the beautiful aesthetics of each product that once it hits your finger tips you wonder how you lived without out it. It is also not the packaging that in most cases is harder to throw away that any of the actual products. Neither is it the interface or user ability that every product seems to intuitively have almost reading your mind about what and where you need to go to find what you want. The funny or stylish marketing campaigns that seem to be ridiculously simply and beautifully crafted that they leave creative directors wishing they had thought of it first. In fact that point is so relevant that I cannot ever remember reading a manual that came with any Apple product I have purchased over the years. So what is it?

The answer is simple. All of the above. Many, many products seem to achieve one or maybe even two of the points I mentioned. But rarely do any, on a consistent basis, reach the dizzy heights that Apple seems to achieve with every product it creates. I have two ipods. For the life of me I do not understand why I bought the second one accept I fell in love in the Apple store with the ipod touch. This I hasten to ad was right after I already purchased the 3G iphone. When I returned home my wife asked me where was the logic in buying what now appeared to be my third MP3 player. I had no answer other than, “Look at it, it’s beautiful!” Not really the answer my wife was looking for but she has known me long enough to understand that logic and reason had nothing to do with this purchase. 

I remember hearing a story about Steve Jobs stopping a very high powered meeting to discuss the size of font on the the itunes interface. Apparently he was arguing about 1 or 2 point size difference. That it seems is the difference between having a great product and having that everyone things, “Oh, what if they did this or that?” Every time Apple launches a product people are left open mouthed and captivated by the sheer genius that is Steve Jobs and the people of Apple. Whether you are an Apple user, a casual fan or anti Apple agent there is no denying the beauty of their products. The way they brought color with the imacs and removed what was a beige nightmare for us all. Still no one has managed a quantum leap like that without it feeling like walking in Apples footsteps. And there is the crux of it all while the competition and the rest of the world drools over the latest masterpiece they are already working on the next. Ensuring every little detail of every single aspect of every product consistently has created the brand that Apple is. And we just can’t get enough of it.

So, of course, you wipe away a few tears about an extraordinary song from a beloved musical composition from an unbelievable talent and indomitable human spirit and unquestionable skepticism but “there is no average.”

The power of a dream shakes you to your very being.

I want a dream like that…don’t you? Not necessarily on a stage in front of judges in a nationwide competition with a mesmerizing, God-given vocal talent. Very few can be blessed with a seemingly inborn physical ability and natural love of singing or any other aptitude.

But what about an emotional, psychological need to be the best we can be if only we had more money and time freedom?

What if my dream was basic to have a simple home business that provided me with as much income as I desired, small or large, dependent on how much time I spent.

What if this home business was based on the network marketing concept? What if I had a simple 3-step business plan that explained the business model about leverage, residual income and duplication? What if, with daily affirmations, I had no more excuses about the level of self-confidence, self-belief and success I can achieve because I am worth to live my full potential.

Ever since we bought kung fu panda on dvd my boys (8 and 6) favourite thing to do is test their new found kung fu skills on each other.
They love it especially the younger one. I was watching them going about their kung fu business in the front yard today and the younger one was getting really frustrated because his brother would move just out of reach every time he tried to land a kick or a punch. Just so you know , they don’t try to hurt each other deliberately it’s more about the style than anything although they do get hurt sometimes. Anyway the 6 year old had had enough of his brothers evasive maneuvers and dropped to the ground in tears. I called him over and asked what was happening. He said “he keeps moving , I can’t get him”. So I said “well try harder”.
He does but the same thing happens. Frustrated at the results he’s getting he comes over and we go through the whole thing again but the results are the same.
So I said “it’s crazy to keep doing the same thing over and over again if it isn’t working try something else” . Naturally he asks “What”?
